Gabion Wall Construction

Gabion wall construction
Gabion walls are retaining walls built by stacking stone in a gabion cage or gabion basket that can serve many purposes but are most often used to create tiered or leveled ground in gardens.
Do gabion walls need foundations?
Most gabion walls do not require concrete foundations.
How deep does a gabion wall need to be?
Gabion aprons are commonly used to protect the toe of a retaining wall structure from scour that could cause undermining in channel works applications. It is recommended that the gabion apron be a minimum of 9"-12" in depth.
What are the disadvantages of gabions?
Disadvantages/Problems Low habitat value. Gabions are more expensive than either vegetated slopes or riprap. The wire baskets used for gabions may be subject to heavy wear and tear due to wire abrasion by bedload movement in streams with high velocity flow. Difficult to install, requiring large equipment.
Do gabions need a concrete base?
Most gabion walls do not require concrete foundations.
How do you support a gabion wall?
Install support posts. Support posts help add stability to your wall to also reduce the risk of collapse. They need to be strong enough to properly support the gabions and should be secured in a concrete slab underneath the basket wall.
How long will a gabion wall last?
Gabions are designed to be used in permanent structures but their longevity is directly related to the environment they are installed in. This means life expectancy of gabion walls can be anywhere from 10 to 75 years depending on the install environment.
How do you prepare the ground for a gabion wall?
Most gabion retaining walls don't need concrete foundations Depending on the wall height, a 50mm to 100mm layer of compacted 40mm MOT Type 1 sub base, crushed from either granite, limestone of clean crushed concrete, is all that is required for most gabion walls.
Do gabion baskets need drainage?
Good drainage makes gabion walls especially useful. This is because the gaps between the rocks prevent the build-up of pressure from trapped water that commonly occurs with other types of retaining walls.
How do you stop gabions from bulging?
When filling the baskets it is necessary to insert a brace in the middle of the basket. This is important to stop the face bulging when filling. The higher the wall the more important this is as the more force exerted on the face.
How do you secure a gabion basket to the ground?
You can use a building rubble such as crushed concrete or brick at the rear of your basket, but this should be crushed to 100-200mm. Mobile Crushers can be hired for this purpose to be used on site. The rock fill should be tightly packed, minimising voids. If possible, the fronts should be hand-packed.
How high can a gabion wall be built?
The total height of the wall does not exceed 1 metre above the natural ground surface. The wall does not form part of a fence for a pool. The wall is no closer than 1.5 metres to a building or another retaining wall.
Do gabions need maintenance?
No requirement for any cleaning is anticipated. If any fencing has been installed at the top of the wall to prevent falls, this will need to be inspected to ensure it remains adequate. Typically any fencing will not last as long as the structure and will need to be replaced during the lifespan of the retaining wall.
Do weeds grow in gabions?
If you stack gabion baskets, you run the risk that they fall over or become displaced. Will weeds grow among the stones? No, this will not happen in any environment with normal levels of soiling.
What to fill gabions with?
Interlocking, angular stones are the best for filling gabions, measuring at least 80mm for 75mm holes. The recommended stone size is between 100-200mm, such as our gabion limestone rock. Place the larger stones at the bottom and the sides of the gabion, with flat stones facing the walls of the cage.
Can you fill gabions with gravel?
Filling gabions with ornamental gravel is possible if the wire baskets are made of a wire mesh corresponding to the size of the stones or if the mesh size is taken into account. Ornamental gravel can be made in individual stone types and colours or in mixtures.
Can you fill gabions with soil?
Raised beds can be built in a number of ways. Some of the most common are below. Gabion baskets can be used to line a larger bed area giving you a 6” or 1” thick border of gabion baskets. Then you fill the void between the baskets with soil and you are ready to plant.
What wire is used for gabion wall?
The wire used for gabions is a zinc-coated welded wire.
How wide does my gabion wall need to be?
A conservative value of base width = 2/3 wall height. A professional stability analysis may determine that the gabion gravity retaining wall base width be less than or greater than ½ - 2/3 wall height.
Are gabion walls strong?
Thanks to their strength and permeability, gabion walls are also extremely long-lasting, durable and sustainable, so won't need replacing or repairing as often as other walls.
